Both dentists from the Fauchard Center took their family to Japan for continuing education and some vacation. The meeting was organized by the International Association of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. The conference was appropriately held in Hiroshima. What made the meeting even more interesting what the fact that it took place in May 2011, a few months after a huge earthquake struck Japan and caused the nuclear disaster at Fukushima.
The site of the first atomic bomb explosion was quite an experience. Dr. Gander learned a lot about the long term effects of radiation on human tissues. I reinforced the policy of The Fauchard Center to reduce radiation as much as possible and generate the most useful information with as little X-ray exposure as possible. Especially constricting the field of view and reducing retakes by proper patient positioning are helpful in reducing the exposure from cone beam CT.
Sightseeing took us to Kyoto and Nara, both historic capitals of Japan. It is remarkable to see how the Japanese have organized their society. Especially to bullet train system is ideal for a country with the size of Japan and the density of the population. We hope to go back some day.
We have donated money to the effort to rebuild northern Japan after the eartquake and tsunami. The need is great and we hope you will do the same. The destruction and misery in the Sendai area is truly beyond belief.
